Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the upcoming Italian Open in Rome amid a slump in form, extending his three-match losing streak. The 24-time Grand Slam champion was recently defeated by Matteo Arnaldi at the Madrid Open. Tournament officials confirmed his absence on social media, while Djokovic shared on Instagram: “Rome I will miss you. I hope we meet next year.”

Following his early exit in Madrid, the 37-year-old acknowledged facing a “new reality,” where winning even a single match has become the goal — a stark contrast to his dominance over the past two decades. The Italian Open, starting May 7, is the final major clay-court event before the French Open, a tournament Djokovic has previously won six times. However, he may now head to Roland Garros without a single clay victory since beating Carlos Alcaraz last summer in the Olympic final.

Despite a heavier playing schedule than last year, Djokovic has struggled, losing his opening match in four of his previous five events. “Grand Slams are where I want to peak,” he said. “I’ll try my best, but I’m not a favorite this time. Maybe that helps.”
