Lok Sabha Sets Panel to Probe Justice Varma

On 12 August 2025, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla took fast action and formed a three -member inquiry committee, which will investigate serious allegations against Justice Yashwant Verma. The development has come to light after getting burnt cash from his residence in Delhi, which has created widespread concern about the credibility of the judiciary.

The committee comprises Supreme Court judge Arvind Kumar, Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Srivastava of the Madras High Court, and senior advocate B.V. Acharya from Karnataka, Speaker Birla accepted a motion signed by 146 Lok Sabha MPs seeking Justice Varma’s impeachment, ensuring that the judicial removal process is formally underway.

Birla emphasized in Parliament that “the process of removal should begin,” underscoring the gravity of the charges and the urgent need for transparency. The inquiry is expected to move quickly; the committee has been asked to submit its findings as early as possible, and until then, the motion for removal will remain pending.

The Supreme Court has already dismissed Justice Varma’s plea challenging the in-house inquiry report from which parallels are now drawn stating that proper procedures were followed and noting that his conduct “did not inspire confidence”.

This moves highlights Parliament’s commitment to accountability and sets a precedent in handling judicial misconduct. The unfolding proceedings will be watched closely, as they could lead to one of the rare removals of a High Court judge in independent India.
