In a sensational turn of events, Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft and prominent philanthropist, appears to have shifted his stance on climate change, prompting a victory claim from former US President Donald Trump. According to a leaked or viral memo, Gates reportedly wrote that climate change, while serious, would not lead to the end of human civilisation challenging some of his earlier, more alarmist public positions.

Trump, who has long been sceptical of mainstream climate science, responded swiftly on his platform, declaring: “I (WE!) just won the War on the Climate Change Hoax. Bill Gates has finally admitted that he was completely WRONG on the issue.”

The memo indicates that Gates’ focus may now be shifting towards treating climate change as one among many global challenges, such as poverty and disease, rather than the predominant existential threat. He argued that too much emphasis on near-term emission cuts may divert attention from broader human welfare goals.

This development holds significant implications. For environmental advocates, it represents a concerning pivot from a figure once vocally engaged in climate activism. For political actors like Trump, it offers an opportunity to use a powerful voice from the tech world as validation of their position. For the general public, it complicates what has been a relatively clear narrative of climate urgency.

Observers note that Gates’ change of tone might reflect growing frustration with the pace and cost of transformation, or a strategic repositioning given geopolitical realities and competing global priorities. At the same time, critics warn of the danger of misinterpreting the nuance: Gates did not say climate change is trivial, but that framing and strategy matter.

In short: the memo and Trump’s reaction have turned a technical internal document into a major public spectacle. What remains to be tested is whether this really signals a new consensus in climate discourse or simply a clever media manoeuvre.
