ECI Begins Preparations for Vice-Presidential Election After Dhankhar’s Resignation
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) that it has initiated the process for conducting the vice-presidential election. The poll panel has begun forming the electoral college, which consists of Members of Parliament from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Additionally, the ECI is in the process of appointing Returning Officers who will oversee the conduct of the election.
The Commission stated that once these preparatory steps are completed, it will soon announce the official schedule for the vice-presidential poll. This development comes in the wake of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s unexpected resignation on Monday (July 21, 2025), reportedly due to health concerns. Dhankhar’s resignation was unexpected, as his term was set to continue until August 10, 2027. His early departure has made it crucial to initiate the constitutional process. The ECI is now working swiftly to ensure the smooth and timely conduct of the election.
