On a late Tuesday night along the busy stretch of the Modasa‑Lunawada highway in Gujarat, a chilling scene played out that has left residents stunned and authorities scrambling. According to reports, a motorcyclist and his father-in-law were struck from behind by a car driven by a teacher allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
The motorcyclist, identified as Sunil Machhar, and his father-in-law, Dinesh Charel, were returning home from a worksite near Nikoda village, heading toward Lakhanpur. The collision occurred near Babaliya village when the teacher’s car crashed into their bike from behind. Machhar was thrown aside, but Charel ended up precariously on the car’s hood while the motorcycle lodged into the car’s front fender. Remarkably, the car instead of stopping continued to drive for about 750 metres with Charel and the motorcycle dragged along.
It was only after a family travelling in another car witnessed the horrifying scene and intervened that the vehicle was forced to halt. The teacher, named as Manish Patel, is a resident of Kakachiya village in Lunawada taluka (Mahisagar district) and works at a government primary school in Jarod. His brother, Mehul Patel, was in the car with him. A liquor bottle was found in the vehicle.
Police sources say that the incident has prompted a criminal case under sections for “driving in a manner endangering human life”, negligence causing grievous hurt, attempted culpable homicide, damage to property, and related motor-vehicle offences. Authorities are also proceeding to revoke Manish’s driving licence and have informed the education department about his status as a teacher.
Local witnesses report shock and fear. One driver, Aakash Nathani, described how his family spotted the bike missing and realised one man was on the car bonnet being dragged. He immediately intervened and halted the car, keen to stress that “strict action should be taken” against the driver.
This incident raises serious questions about road safety, the mindset of drivers, and the oversight of those in positions of public trust. A teacher expected to set a moral example allegedly turned into a reckless driver who endangered lives. It is likely to renew calls for stricter enforcement of drunk driving laws, more robust monitoring of educators’ conduct, and public awareness about responsible driving. The injured parties are hospitalised and investigations continue.
