The atmosphere in Bihar’s Lakhisarai constituency turned tense when Vijay Kumar Sinha, Deputy Chief Minister and BJP candidate, accused opposition supporters of attacking his convoy during the first phase of the state assembly elections. Arriving at Khoriari village, Sinha alleged that stones and even cow-dung were thrown at him and his polling agents, describing the incident as an orchestrated attempt to intimidate voters.

Sinha didn’t hold back his criticism of law-enforcement on duty. He called the local Superintendent of Police “weak and cowardly,” demanding the deployment of a “special force” to restore order and ensure that polling could proceed peacefully. The SP countered by stating that things were calm in the morning, but escalations happened after the deputy CM’s arrival.

For Sinha, the incident underlines more than just local violence: it reflects his view of a larger battle ahead. He accused the rival Rashtriya Janata Dal of acting like “goons” and claimed the aggression foreshadowed how governance would be handled if power shifted. By characterising his adversaries as disruptors of democratic exercise, Sinha positioned himself not only as a candidate but as a protector of voter rights.

The electoral backdrop adds gravity to the clash. The first phase covers 121 of Bihar’s 243 seats, with this round underway, and voting scheduled for the remainder on November 11. Meanwhile, an official from the polling body confirmed that the state’s top‐law-enforcement officer had been instructed to act swiftly, emphasising that violence or intimidation would not be tolerated.

From a wider perspective, incidents like these have the potential to dampen voter confidence. When a senior leader openly lashes out at police for lapses in security, it raises questions about the state of law and order on election day. For voters in Lakhisarai, the message is clear: the ability to freely cast a vote may yet require more than just a trip to the booth.
