First Citizenship Certificates Handed out to 14 People under CAA

First Citizenship Certificates Handed out to 14 People under CAA

The first set of citizenship certificates under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) was issued to 14 people on Wednesday, nearly two months after the Centre notified the rules. Under CAA, minorities persecuted on religious grounds in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan can acquire citizenship in India.

In an exclusive conversation with India Today TV, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “Today, the Ministry of Home Affairs has initiated the process of issuing certificates (under CAA). I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all 14 refugees. CAA is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise to the nation…”

The notification of rules by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on March 11 came four years after the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was passed by Parliament in December 2019.

Wednesday saw 14 people get their hands on the citizenship certificates after their applications were processed online. The certificates were handed over by Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla.

Bhavna, one of the applicants who received a citizenship certificate, expressed happiness at getting the opportunity to pursue further education in India.

“I have got the citizenship today and I am feeling very happy, I can study further… I came here in 2014, and I was very happy when this (CAA) was passed…in Pakistan, we girls couldn’t study and it was difficult to go out, if we had to go out, we used to wear burqa. In India, we get to study, I am currently in 11th standard and I got to tuition as well…,” Bhavna was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

The CAA amends the Citizenship Act of 1955 to provide a fast-track pathway to Indian citizenship for migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who belong to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian communities and who entered India on or before December 31, 2014, due to facing religious persecution in their home countries.

The legislation has been a subject of intense debate and widespread protests across India.

In March, the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government moved the Supreme Court against the implementation of CAA, arguing that the rules were “against the basic principle, fundamental principles of the Constitution”.

Last month, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said that CAA will be repealed in the first session of Parliament after the INDIA bloc forms the government at the Centre.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government has firmly defended the implementation of the legislation.

“These rules will enable minorities persecuted on religious grounds in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to acquire citizenship in our nation,” Union home minister Amit Shah tweeted soon after the CAA was notified.

National Dengue Day 2024: Raising Awareness and Combating the Disease

National Dengue Day 2024: Raising Awareness and Combating the Disease

National Dengue Day is observed annually on May 16th in India to raise awareness about dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease that poses a significant public health challenge. This day is dedicated to educating the public on prevention strategies, early detection, and effective treatment methods to reduce the incidence and impact of dengue.

Understanding Dengue

Dengue fever is caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti. Symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash, and mild bleeding (such as nose or gum bleeds). In severe cases, it can develop into dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, both of which can be fatal.

Significance of National Dengue Day

The primary goal of National Dengue Day is to increase public awareness about the disease and to promote proactive measures to prevent mosquito breeding and bites. It is also an opportunity for health authorities to review current strategies and strengthen efforts to control the spread of dengue.

Prevention Strategies

Effective dengue prevention focuses on controlling the mosquito population and avoiding mosquito bites. Key measures include:

  1. Eliminating Breeding Sites: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so it is crucial to regularly empty, clean, or cover containers that hold water, such as buckets, flower pots, and water storage tanks.
  2. Using Mosquito Repellents and Nets: Applying insect repellent and using mosquito nets can help reduce the risk of mosquito bites, especially during peak mosquito activity periods (early morning and late afternoon).
  3. Community Participation: Public health campaigns often emphasize the importance of community involvement in removing potential breeding sites and reporting high mosquito activity to local authorities.

Government Initiatives

On National Dengue Day, the government and health organizations intensify their efforts to combat dengue through various initiatives:

  • Awareness Campaigns: Educational programs in schools, colleges, and communities highlight the importance of preventive measures and early symptoms recognition.
  • Health Camps: Mobile health units and camps provide free diagnostic services and treatment for dengue fever.
  • Research and Development: Investment in research for vaccines and innovative vector control methods is a critical component of the long-term strategy to fight dengue.

Conclusion

National Dengue Day 2024 serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing battle against dengue fever. By fostering public awareness, encouraging preventive practices, and supporting government initiatives, this observance plays a vital role in mitigating the impact of dengue and safeguarding public health.

Indian Football Icon Sunil Chhetri Announces His Retirement

Indian Football Icon Sunil Chhetri Announces His Retirement

Sunil Chhetri, India’s most decorated footballer, has announced his retirement from international football. Chhetri, 39, made the announcement through a video on social media platform X, mentioning that India’s upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifier game against Kuwait in Kolkata on June 6 will be his last.

“The recollection of the last 19 years is a combination of duty, pressure and immense joy. I never thought that these are the many games I would play for the country, good or bad but now I did but these last one and half two months I did. And this (the feeling) was very strange. I was probably going towards the decision that this game (against Kuwait) is going to be my last,” Chhetri said.

Sunil Chhetri, a name synonymous with Indian football, boasts a glittering career spanning over two decades. This gifted forward has not only dominated domestic leagues but also carved his name on the international stage. Call it coincidences or a twist of fate, Chhetri will play his final game in the city where he made his India debut 19 years ago. India’s game against Kuwait is a must-win to stay in contention for a World Cup Qualifiers Round 3 berth. Currently ranked second in Group A with four points from four games, India travel to face Qatar in their final group stage match. Only the top two teams progress.

“There is one day that I never forget and remember it quite often is the first time I played for my country man, it was unbelievable. But the day before, morning of the day, Sukhi sir, my first national team coach, in the morning he came to me and he’s like, you’re going to start? I can’t tell you how I was feeling man. I took my jersey, I sprayed some perfume on it, I have no idea why. So that day, everything that happened, once he told me, from breakfast to lunch and to the game and to my first goal in my debut, to conceding late 80th minute, that day is probably that I will never forget and is one of the best days of my national team journey,” Chhetri added.

“And the moment I told myself first, that yes, this is the game that is going to be my last, is when I started recollecting everything. It was so strange, I started thinking about this game, that game, this coach, that coach, that team, that member, that ground, that away match, this good game, that bad game, all my individual performances, everything came, all the flashes came. So I decided that this is it.”

Watch Sunil Chhetri’s retirement speech below:

Chhetri’s journey began in 2002 with Mohun Bagan. His talent soon propelled him abroad, with stints at the USA’s Kansas City Wizards (2010) and Portugal’s Sporting CP reserves (2012). Back in India, he donned the jerseys of prestigious clubs like East Bengal, Dempo, Mumbai City FC, and currently, Bengaluru FC. It’s with Bengaluru that Chhetri truly flourished, lifting trophies like the I-League (2014, 2016), ISL (2019), and Super Cup (2018). He even led them to the AFC Cup final in 2016.

Chhetri, the goal-scoring machine
While club success is impressive, Sunil Chhetri’s true magic lies in his international exploits. He has been instrumental in India’s victories in the Nehru Cup (2007, 2009, 2012) and the SAFF Championship (2011, 2015, 2021). Most significantly, his contribution to India’s 2008 AFC Challenge Cup win secured their first AFC Asian Cup appearance in 27 years.

But it’s his goalscoring prowess that sets Chhetri apart. Since his debut goal in 2002, he has amassed a staggering tally. With 94 goals in 150 international appearances, he sits comfortably as the third-highest active international goal-scorer, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Argentina’s Lionel Messi. This achievement places him fourth on the all-time list.

Chhetri’s international debut came in 2005, followed by his first goal against Pakistan. A defining moment arrived in the 2011 SAFF Championship, where he surpassed Indian legend I.M. Vijayan’s record of six goals in a single edition by scoring a phenomenal seven, propelling India to victory and becoming the national team’s highest scorer.

Across club and country, Chhetri’s goal tally stands at a remarkable 252 in 515 appearances, averaging almost a goal every two games. This consistency and talent haven’t gone unnoticed. In 2022, FIFA honoured him with a documentary titled “Captain Fantastic,” celebrating his journey and achievements.

Bibhav Kumar, Who ‘Misbehaved’ with Swati Maliwal, Seen with Arvind Kejriwal

Bibhav Kumar, Who ‘Misbehaved’ with Swati Maliwal, Seen with Arvind Kejriwal

Bibhav Kumar, a personal assistant to Arvind Kejriwal who “misbehaved” with AAP MP Swati Maliwal recently, was seen accompanying the Delhi chief minister at Lucknow airport late on Wednesday night. Sanjay Singh, another AAP Rajya Sabha MP, was also spotted alongside the chief minister.

On Thursday, May 16, Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party, was joined by Arvind Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh in a joint news conference in Lucknow.

On Tuesday, Sanjay Singh had at a press conference said that Bibhav Kumar had “misbehaved” with Swati Maliwal at Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence and that the chief minister would take strict action in the matter. The statement had come a day after Swati Maliwal had made a police call from the CM’s residence and also went to the Civil Lines police station.

On Wednesday, Sanjay Singh met Swati Maliwal, even as the Bharatiya Janata Party sharpened its attack on the AAP supremo, asking him to come clean and demanding action against the guilty.

Aam Aadmi Party leaders refused to give details about Sanjay Singh’s meeting with the former DCW chief, who remained incommunicado. The meeting at Swati Maliwal’s residence is seen as an attempt to pacify his party colleague who has been with the AAP since its inception.

Meanwhile, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla slammed Arvind Kejriwal while sharing a picture of Bibhav Kumar with Arvind Kejriwal on social media platform X.

“72 hours. No FIR on Bibhav Kumar instead Kejriwal is protecting him ! Roaming around with him.. It is clear- attack on Swati Maliwal was done at behest of Kejriwal himself. Sheesh Mahal is Apradh Mahal & just like Draupadi cheerharan – a woman Rajya Sabha MP was subjected to violence , assault Now she is being pressured to keep Silent or change her story as is evident from statements of Naveen Jaihind & Nitin Tyagi of AAP hence she hasn’t approached the police yet. True face of AAP – Anti women anarchist party,” Shehzad Poonawalla said.

Meanwhile, vice president of the BJP’s Delhi unit Kapil Mishra, also shared the picture of Arvind Kejriwal, Sanjay Singh and Bibhav Kumar together at the Lucknow airport, pointing out how the Rajya Sabha MP had condemned the incident earlier.

“This is the photo of Lucknow airport last night The one in the black shirt is Vibhav who hit Swati Maliwal Along with Sanjay Singh who said that Bibhav did a very wrong thing, Kejriwal is angry The third one is Kejriwal himself who is accused of getting Swati beaten up,” Mishra posted on X.

Who is Bibhav Kumar, Kejriwal’s PA?

Bibhav Kumar, Arvind Kejriwal’s PA, has been facing ED scrutiny in excise policy-linked money laundering probe as well as alleged irregularities in the Delhi Jal Board.

In February, ED conducted raids at 12 locations, including those connected to Bibhav Kumar and AAP lawmaker ND Gupta. Last month, the probe agency questioned Bibhav Kumar in connection with the excise policy case. He was reportedly questioned to seek clarifications regarding some documents in the excise probe.

A few days later, the Directorate of Vigilance terminated services of Bibhav Kumar as personal secretary to the chief minister of Delhi. Kumar filed an OA before the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) challenging the termination order. However, the CAT refused to stay the termination order, stating that granting such relief would be premature.

The termination order, issued by Special Secretary Vigilance YVVJ Rajshekhar, cited a 2007 case pending against Bibhav Kumar, wherein he was accused of obstructing government work.

The order stated that the charges against Bibhav Kumar were grave in nature, including charges of assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty.
